Sodium bicarbonate is a commonly used alkaline buffering agent in cell culture. The addition of this buffer to the cell culture medium helps to maintain the appropriate pH by using the carbon dioxide present in the incubator. Sodium bicarbonate also acts as a source of sodium and helps in sodium gluconate synthesis during the fermentation process.
